The members of the Greenwood Fire Department Association proudly annonce that our successful fundraising campaign has allowed us to purchase a replacement squad truck for the fire department. This 1991 Ford rescue truck was operated by the Bungay Fire Briagde of Woodstock,CT since it was new in 1991. It was specifically designed to perform the duties we are requiring of it and will fit the Greenwood Fire Departments needs for the next 5 years. The members of the department have been busy placing equipment and supplies on the truck and are planning to completely clean and wax the truck this week. We would like to invite members of the public and all of those especially who supported our fund drive to stop by and see our new addition. This is your truck, using funds donated by concerned citizens who want thier firefighters to have the tools they need to save lives.

Greenwood firefighters were about to begin our monthly meeting on Wednesday September 5 when the pagers began to alert Greenwood, Woodstock, Bethel and Tri-town rescue of a possible structure fire at 357 Howe Hill Road. This address is located 1.5 miles from the Locke's Mill station. On arrival of Chief Owens, he reported a 2 story home with heavy fire showing from the 2nd floor rear. All 3 units from the Locke's Mill station arrived within 5 minutes. Engine 2 deployed a 1 3/4" hoseline and prepared for the fire attack. Apparatus from the Bethel and Woodstock fire departments arrived very close behind us and joined Greenwood firefighters in entering the structure to extinguish the fire. The fire was located in the 2nd floor rear bedroom and extended slightly to the front bedroom. Before the fire attack began Chief Owens called for a rapid intervention team from the Paris Fire Department. This team arrived quickly and set up to rescue any firefighters operating inside the building who may have been in trouble. This specially trained team works closely with the incident commander and trains frequently on this procedure. The automatic dispatch from the communications center contributed to the success of this operation. All of the units responding were on scene within 15 minutes of dispatch. Members of Tri-Town rescue entered the basement to locate the occupants missing cats. Using a thermal imaging camera they located the cats and returned them to the owner. The owners of the home live in Massachsetts and were very grateful that the firefighters were able to save the home, which will require repairs to the 2nd floor but will be liveable in the next few months.

Woostock operates the area ice rescue team and the members of the Greenwood Fire Department were training to support the ice rescue team. Firefighter Jason Thayer donned a dry suit and entered open water on the pond. Members of the Woodstock ice team utilized their rescue sled and removed Jason from the water. Other members were on shore tending lines and providing manpower. Firefighters also practiced drilling through ice to obtain a water source for firefighting. Woodstock utilized their portable pump to draft water through a hole opened by using an ice auger.
